Madrecita
This painting, done in oil on linen, was created as an exploration of traditional images of La Virgen de Guadalupe and the Woman Clothed with the Sun in the book of Revelation. La Virgen de Guadalupe has a powerful history that earns her both love and distrust. It is documented that an indigenous man saw her in a vision, that she is the embodiment of the Virgin Mary. Skeptics say this was Catholic propaganda aimed to bring more converts into the fold. Regardless of the “real” history, she is one of the most powerful and venerated figures in the Americas because of her ability to shapeshift between Catholic and indigenous traditions. The imagery is mixed with that from Revelation 11, which was the inspiration for some of the historical depictions of La Virgen. I painted symbols of power and life with her, maiz and nopal as well as a crescent moon. Just as the desert cared for the woman in Revelation, so has the Earth and her plant offspring cared for the children of La Virgen de Guadalupe.
